
Simon Klavžar studied percussion at the Academy of Music in Ljubljana, the University of Music and Theatre in Munich, and completed postgraduate studies in contemporary music at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Frankfurt.
From 2013 to 2021, he taught percussion at the Conservatory of Music and Ballet in Ljubljana, and since 2021 he has served as Associate Professor of Percussion and Head of the Department of Woodwinds, Brass and Percussion at the Academy of Music in Ljubljana.
As a performer, he is particularly devoted to contemporary music and collaborates with ensembles such as Ensemble Modern, Konzerthausorchester Berlin, Schallfeld Ensemble, Kammerorchester München, Dresdner Philharmonie, Alexej Gerassimez and Friends, among others. Since 2006, together with percussionist Jože Bogolin, he has formed the percussion duo Drumartica, which has performed at venues including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Hermitage Theatre in St. Petersburg, the Berlin Philharmonie, Auditorio de Tenerife, Künstlerhaus Munich, the Kennedy Center in Washington, and the Luxembourg Philharmonie, as well as at numerous alternative venues such as Maribor Prison, the mountain hut Kranjska koča na Ledinah, the Čadrg Records Festival, and repeatedly at Metelkova. Among other achievements, the duo won first prize at the IPCL Luxembourg Competition in 2009 and the Salieri–Zinetti Chamber Music Competition in Verona in 2012. Drumartica released its debut album in 2012, and in a duo with saxophonist Oskar Laznik, Simon Klavžar released the album Saxala, featuring new Slovenian works.
Klavžar has appeared as a soloist and chamber musician at festivals such as Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Rheingau, Wolfsburg Movimentos, and the Berlin Piano Duo Festival, as well as on numerous stages in Slovenia. In the past, he has performed with Stefan Hussong, Joonas Ahonen, the Shalamov Piano Duo, members of the Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society, Bruce Hamilton, Peter Sadlo, Alexej Gerassimez, and Annika Treutler. In 2015, he appeared as a soloist with the RTV Slovenia Symphony Orchestra at the World Music Days, and in 2022, with the same orchestra, he gave the world premiere of the Double Concerto for Percussion and Saxophone Eppur si Muove IV by composer Matej Bonin, with whom he also maintains a fruitful collaboration in the field of music theatre. In the 2023/24 season, he performed the same concerto with the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra, and at the Forum of New Music festival he performed the Percussion Concerto Flash by Agata Zubel. He was a member of the World Percussion Group on its Northern European tour in 2017, and has appeared as a guest lecturer at the music academies and universities of Furman, Western Washington, Gdańsk, Liszt Ferenc University in Budapest, and Salerno, as well as at numerous percussion festivals.
During his studies in Munich, he participated in the production of the interactive children’s concert series Anatol, der Trommeltroll, produced by Mini.Musik.
Between 2015 and 2020, in collaboration with Jože Bogolin, he served as artistic director of the classical music concert series Metabonma at Metelkova. In 2026, together with percussion students and in collaboration with Assistant Professor Matej Bonin and Katarina Kukovič, he created Water Workshop, a music workshop for children in the first educational cycle.
